Emeritus Professor of Irish Visual Culture UU, Belfast. Research has focused on modernist/contemporary Irish art and architecture by way of publications and curating national and international exhibitions.

Director of the Orchard Gallery. Derry, 1996-1999. The gallery was internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for the visual arts. Developed international outreach programme with exhibitions of Irish artists in New York, Paris and Ljubliana.

Former President of the International Association of Art Critics ( AICA Irish Section).

Former Vice- President of AICA International.

Former member of the Visual Arts committee, Arts Council N.Ireland.

Former member of the Audience Council, BBC, N Ireland.

Former Board member of Ormeau Baths Galley, Belfast

In 2005 I co-organised the exhibition ‘Prepossession’ at the Ivan Dougherty Gallery, University of New South Wales.The exhibition and related colloquium brought together artists whose works intersected with key debates on the representation of trauma related to political violence, racism and colonialism.
