My interdisciplinary research explores the relationship between media and politics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I am particularly interested in coverage of national questions. Broader themes of interest include colonialism, self-determination, and language. My thesis and forthcoming monograph, ‘Miserable conflict and confusion’: The Irish Question in British Newspapers, 1916-22, examines British newspaper coverage of Ireland from the aftermath of the Easter Rising to the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

My next project explores American press coverage of the Irish question. I am also working on an article about my grandmother’s journey from Ireland to America, utilising correspondences and ephemera to consider her emigration journey and news from ‘home’.
