Emeritus Professor of English, University of Galway. Formerly a member of ACIS. About to finish a very long manuscript on the life and work of the Limerick Orientalist, Max Arthur Macauliffe (1838-1913). He graduated from Queen’s College Galway in 1860, joined the Indian Civil Service, eventually becoming a judge. He was posted to the Punjab, became immediately fascinated by the Sikh religion, learned the languages of the Granth, the sacred book of the Sikhs, and Oxford University Press published his celebrated book, The Sikh Religion, in six volumes in 1909. He is regarded as the greatest western scholar ever to study the Sikh religion.
