Deirdre Nuttall is an ethnologist, researcher, and writer with a particular interest in oral history, and in religion as a cultural identifier, in symbolic thoughts and behaviours, and in narratives of the supernatural and macabre. She has a Master’s in Social Anthropology from the University of Durham, and a PhD in Folklore/Ethnology from University College Dublin, and has carried out fieldwork in Ireland, Newfoundland, and Guatemala.

Deirdre’s book, Different and the Same: a Folk History of the Protestants of Independent Ireland, Eastwood Books (a division of Wordwell), 2020, was one of the Irish Independents Books of the Year. She has two books pending publication this year, A People’s History of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown (working title), scheduled for June, and a co-authored book, with Patsy Peril, Swimming Upstream; My fight for the Atlantic Wild Salmon (working title), currently scheduled for September or October.
