Darren Colbourne is a PhD researcher located at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland. Hailing from North Carolina, Darren decided to make the move to Belfast in order to pursue a doctorate which examines the history and political trajectory of the People’s Democracy, a New Left movement which originated at Queen’s in 1968. He is interested in the broader trans-Atlantic student left during the period and uses an interdisciplinary methodology to compare the PD’s development to that of the American Students for a Democratic Society. His work borrows from the relational approach in sociology and analyses the process of shaping, maintaining, and shifting collective identifications during periods of contentious mobilisation.
