My scholarship centers on Eugene O’Neill, the only American playwright to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, as well as the only one to win as many as four Pulitzer Prizes. I am the Co-President of the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House, and I am the Co-Chair of the Eugene O’Neill International Festival of Theatre in New Ross, Ireland. I also publish frequently in “The Eugene O’Neill Review,” published by Pennsylvania State University Press.
I am not a professional academic, although I am a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
Retired now, I served in three Presidential administrations as the second-ranking attorney at the United States Department of State, the general counsel of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the head of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). I was also the general counsel of the California Department of Transportation.
The University of Oklahoma Press published my book, “The Campo Indian Landfill War: The Fight for Gold in California’s Garbage.” It was a “Choice” Outstanding Academic Book.
