Cian T. McMahon, PhD is an associate professor of transnational history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he holds a joint appointment in the Department of History and Honors College. In June 2021, New York University Press’ “Glucksman Irish Diaspora” book series published his latest book, entitled The Coffin Ship: Life and Death at Sea during the Great Irish Famine. It offers a new perspective on nineteenth-century Irish migration by focusing on the lived experience of the voyage itself. His first book, The Global Dimensions of Irish Identity: Race, Nation, and the Popular Press, 1840-1880, was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2015. He has also published peer-reviewed articles in a range of journals including the American Historical Review, Irish Historical Studies, and Journal of American Ethnic History.
