We invite submissions from all fields in Irish Studies for an interdisciplinary conference on the theme of modernity within the contexts of Ireland and Irish America. In an era marked by rapid technological advancement, shifting cultural paradigms, and evolving social structures, the concept of modernity has remained a dynamic area of inquiry in both Irish and Irish American studies. We seek 250-word proposals for individual papers or complete panels that explore various facets of modernity, examining how they intersect with issues such as identity, migration, economics, culture, and diaspora experiences. Proposals may interrogate the tensions between tradition and progress, analyze the impact of modernity on literary and cultural production, or investigate the role of modernity in shaping political movements and social change in Ireland and the Irish American community. We will also happily accept proposals on any topic relating to Irish Studies in general.

Paige Reynolds will be this year’s McBride/Keynote Lecturer for the conference. She will be talking about her new book, Modernism in Irish Women’s Contemporary Writing (OUP 2024).

The Graduate Hotel in the historic Short North Arts District will serve as the home for our conference facilities. The Short North is a quick Uber/Taxi ride from the Columbus airport, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, so most attendees will not need to rent a car. Columbus is home to the world famous Columbus Zoo and is a two-hour drive to the Rock & Roll Hall of fame in Cleveland.
