Notice of Employment Opportunity
The University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, is seeking applications for the position of Scholar/Lecturer in the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies.
The University of St. Thomas, a private Catholic university committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, is seeking an experienced Irish Studies Scholar to teach the Irish language and other courses. The University enrolls more than 3,400 students with most enrolled at its beautiful campus in Houston’s Museum District. 
The students come from 36 states and 50 countries.
This successful candidate will report to the Director of the Center for Irish Studies and will be a full-time, non-tenured (non-permanent) faculty member with a full teaching load in fall and spring semesters with an opportunity for participating in study abroad courses.
Start Date: 1 August 2016 for fall 2016 (Fall classes start 22 August 2016)
Salary: Will depend on qualifications and experience
Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, candidates must have a minimum of a fully conferred master’s degree in the Irish language, preferably with graduate level study in another area of Irish Studies (i.e., an interdisciplinary master’s degree or Ph.D.).
Candidates also should:
(i) Demonstrate exceptional verbal and written communication and public relations skills;
(ii) Possess some Irish language teaching experience and demonstrate teaching excellence, as evidenced by letters of recommendation, awards, scholarships and other factors; and
(iii) Demonstrate expertise and research in an area of Irish Studies in addition to the Irish language (i.e., history, politics, literature, mythology or music).
In addition, candidates must be dependable and be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Duties and Responsibilities include: 


(i) Teaching Irish language classes at the University (4 levels: Elementary Irish I, Elementary Irish II, Intermediate Irish I and Intermediate Irish II) each fall and spring semester;
(ii) Developing and teaching other courses in Irish Studies;
(iii) Teaching and traveling with students on study abroad in Ireland and Northern Ireland;
(iv) Advising students the instructor teaches and prospective Irish Studies students;
(v) Attending and promoting Irish Studies cultural outreach events; and
(vi) Participating in activities to increase student engagement, including working with the student Irish Club.
Immigration Status:
If applicable, this contract is contingent upon obtaining appropriate employment authorization from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
