Comhfhios Boston College:
An Irish Studies Conference

The Irish Studies Doctoral Students of Boston College, in conjunction with the Center for Irish Programs, are pleased to launch Comhfhios Boston College, a conference emphasizing new theories, new media, and innovative approaches to Irish Studies. Comhfhios, meaning “knowledge together” or “open to all knowledge,” invites emerging scholars in all Irish Studies fields to gather in Boston, share research projects, and generate new discourses within the discipline.
The conference will feature a keynote address by Angela Bourke (Irish, Celtic Studies, and Folklore, UCD) and a presentation by Richard Kearney (Philosophy, BC), as well as a panel presentation and an “unconference” roundtable. We invite proposals for papers in any discipline relating to this year’s theme, “Living Irishness.” New scholars and graduate students are encouraged to apply. We are accepting proposals for traditional 15-minute panel presentations as well as proposals to moderate small group discussions around a thought-provoking research question.
Topics within the theme of “Living Irishness” can include but are not limited to:
- pop culture
- cross-culture
- nationalism, transnationalism, & diaspora
- feminism
- ecocriticism
- violence and conflict
- the everyday
- new materialisms
- trade, economy, and capitalism
- representations of living or performing Irishness
Fifteen-minute conference proposals should be between 200 and 300 words. Proposals for discussion mediators should include a research question and a 100-200 word summary of the scholar’s current research and methodologies. Proposals should be submitted to taylorft@bc.edu by January 26th.
