Irish Newspaper Archives (INA) is the world’s largest digital archive of Irish newspaper content, holding over 260 titles and 19 million pages spanning from 1738 to the present day. Founded in 1967 as a microfilm bureau and relaunched as a fully searchable digital archive in 2002, INA has been digitizing, indexing, and preserving Ireland’s printed record ever since.

For scholars of Irish history, literature, and culture, INA offers an unrivaled primary source collection covering every major era — from the Ascendancy and the Famine through the Revival, Rising, and Revolution, to partition, the Troubles, and contemporary Ireland.

Core Collection

The Core Collection encompasses flagship titles including the Belfast Newsletter (1738), Freeman’s Journal (1763), Irish Examiner (1841), and Irish Independent (1905), alongside over 100 regional papers still publishing today — covering all 32 counties and offering an unmatched depth of local Irish coverage that national databases simply cannot match.

Radical Newspaper Archive

Of particular value to ACIS members is the Radical Newspaper Archive — a curated collection of scarce, short-run titles documenting Ireland’s revolutionary, labour, and nationalist movements, including An Phoblacht, Sinn Féin, The Irish Worker, The Irish Citizen, and Irish War News. These are voices rarely found together in any other archive, and an indispensable resource for scholars of the Irish revolution, labour history, suffrage, and political thought.
