Building a Nation: the Effects of Irish Nationalism on Traditional Dance, Music, and Lyric Poetry
Chair: Marta Deyrup
Call for Papers
The Easter Rising had a dramatic effect on Irish culture, influencing the subject matter of traditional song—many of the haunting ballads that were composed shortly after the insurrection are still sung in Ireland today. Though less well known, the efforts of the Gaelic League and the Young Ireland movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to promote folk dancing, lyric poetry and song as native to Ireland led to some of the most recognizable and popular forms of Irish artistic expression today. This panel seeks papers that look at the traditional dance, music, and poetry through the prism of Irish nationalism, as inspired by the Rising, its precedents, and its aftermath.
