Irish Food Studies, Past and Present
The Canadian Journal of Irish Studies invites submissions for a special issue on Irish Food Studies, Past and Present, co-edited by Dr. Rhona Richman Kenneally (Professor, Department of Design and Computation Arts, Concordia University, and Editor of CJIS) and Dr. Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire (Lecturer, Culinary Arts, Dublin Institute of Technology, and Chair of the Organizing Committee, Dublin Gastronomy Symposium).
Essays are invited on all aspects of Irish food studies, from any relevant discipline(s). Topics might include, but need not be confined to, an investigation of the concept of, and what constitutes, ‘Irish cuisine’; Irish systems and networks of food production, present-day or historic; engagements with food in Irish literature, song, film, theatre, the fine arts, etc.; Irish cookbooks or other prescriptive material; food education (at home or in formal primary to tertiary settings); Irish food production itself as creative practice; or comparative studies of Irish and other national food ecologies.
Given the commitment of CJIS to highlight the study of Irish visual, material and spatial culture, relevant illustrations of all kinds, recipes, or other types of evidence, for which reproduction permission can be obtained, are especially welcome for consideration as inspiration for, and/or reinforcement of, the arguments presented in the essay. Photo essays or primary-source submissions (previously-unpublished) will also be considered for publication.
It is the tradition that CJIS special issues are produced as a quality, hardcover volume of high aesthetic as well as academic appeal. The journal is also available online through JSTOR.
The length of a submission should not exceed 6,000 words. Submission guidelines are available on the CJIS website: www.irishstudies.ca/canadian-journal-of-irish-studies. Please send a 250-word abstract and a short biography with your academic affiliation to both co-editors by 1 February 2015. We will be pleased to answer any questions, and reply to ideas about submissions, prior to the deadline.
